There’s a quality you’ll notice in almost every genuinely powerful person: |
They don’t seem particularly interested in…convincing you that they’re powerful. |
They’re not constantly explaining themselves. |
They’re not chasing approval. |
They’re not putting on some “mask” of confidence only when they’re around other people. |
There’s something underneath all of it that makes those things unnecessary: |
They know what they’re here to do. |
Think about some of the characters who pull us in through the screen: |
Ragnar Lothbrok and Logan Roy live in completely different worlds, but both are consumed by a mission. |
Vito Corleone and Eddie Horniman are driven by loyalty, family, and responsibility. |
James Bond and Maximus are propelled forward by an internal code that existed whether anyone understood it or not. |
We’re drawn to these characters because they possess something that many of us are secretly craving in our lives: |
internal direction. |
And, you see the same thing in real life. |
The person with a clear mission enters a meeting differently. |
They make decisions differently. |
They handle criticism differently (or, they don’t bother with it at all). |
They don’t need every person to understand their choices because their choices aren’t being made for every person. |
That doesn’t mean they’re arrogant or dismissive, it means their center of gravity is inside themselves. |
This is one of the great misconceptions about personal power. |
We tend to associate it with money, status, appearance, titles, influence, or authority. |
Those things can amplify power… |
They cannot create it. |
Real power begins much earlier. |
It begins when you decide what matters enough that you’re willing to organize your life around it. |
When your internal direction becomes stronger than your need for external approval. |
When your standards become stronger than your desire to fit in. |
When you stop asking the world who you should be… |
And start answering that question for yourself. |
The most powerful person in the room is rarely the one trying hardest to look powerful. |
They’re usually the one who knows exactly why they’re there in the first place. |
