Shelby Sapp and the power of personal branding

Scam, or genius? (Or both?)

Shelby Sapp is the perfect example of why I tell everyone it’s so important to build a powerful personal brand.

And whether you like her or not, she brands herself as the world’s #1 female sales trainer.

Over this past weekend, she just hosted an event where she generated between $10M and $45M, depending on who you ask.

A lot of people are saying: “This is a scam, you can get this same information for free online.”

While that may be true, it misses the entire point of a personal brand. and why people were there in the first place…

People weren’t just paying for the information; they were paying for Shelby Sapp.

They paid to be in that energy, that presence, and to be able to imagine themselves up on that stage if they do the things that Shelby has done.

Again, it doesn’t really matter what the information is that’s being presented…you can get sales tactics in books, online courses, and in countless free YouTube videos…

It’s how they felt while they were receiving the information.

You cannot replicate that environment on YouTube. You can’t be surrounded by hundreds of people sharing in the experience and feeding off of each other’s enthusiasm through a screen, no matter how large it is.

The attendees paid for what Shelby Sapp stands for, and what being in her presence tells people that they, themselves, stand for.

That’s why people wear certain brands of clothing, or drive certain brands of cars…because associating themselves with that brand sends a message to other people who see them with that brand.

This is why Apple’s “Think Different” campaign was worth billions. People would say: “Hey, I think different, that product must be for me.”

Using the product goes far beyond a choice about features or benefits, it’s a statement of identity.

Whether or not you like what Shelby did, there is a lesson in it:

Create a personal brand for yourself that doesn’t just teach people something, but that makes them feel a certain way when they associate with it (or you).

That’s what the world’s most powerful brands understand.
