There is much better evidence to suggest that vitamin D makes the body easier to absorb into the bloodstream, and that it may even boost immunity.

But some scientists have been dubious before about the effects of vitamin D in the body. And while they may not recommend it on a daily basis, researchers from New York University and the California Institute of Technology have now confirmed that its effect appears to be more pronounced after a study of people treated with vitamin D for the first time.

In the study published in 2011, researchers at New York University's School of Medicine and the California Institute of Technology found that when high-dose vitamin D was given in the hands of healthy people for 6 months, it made their bodies "much more resistant to infections" and reduced their risk of disease, compared to placebo. The researchers believe that even people who started taking vitamin D in early adulthood should not expect vitamin D to work as well as other forms of vitamin D, which are more frequently used to heal wounds.
